There are some important "Vital Signs" that tells us about the health of our bodies. They are body’s temperature, pulse rate (heart rate), respiratory rate and blood pressure. The blood pressure is one of the most important.

The heart that works non stop, pumps on average five liters of blood per minute. Tigether with the blood circulatory system it forms the supply system of the body which provides nutrients and oxygen. It would take to much space for this article to explain exactly how it works, and it is more important for us to know how monitor our hearts conditions. To do it, we can use blood pressure readings. We can get a rough idea of how our hearts are functioning, by simply measuring the pressure exerted by the blood, as it flows through the body.

How is Blood Pressure Measured

A device called the Sphygmomanometer has been used for years to measure blood pressure, but nowadays electronic meters are used more often and they are much easier to read. Blood pressure reading is calibrated in units of ‘mm Hg’.

The human heart is similar to a pumping machine and it constantly contracts to pump out blood and expands to take in blood, so blood pressure has a periodic characteristic of rising and falling with the contraction and relaxation. Blood pressure has a maximum and a minimum value. The maximum value is called ‘Systolic’ pressure and the minimum value is called ‘Diastolic’ pressure. So blood pressure is always measured in pairs; a high value and a low value, which are the systolic and diastolic pressures respectively.

Normal Range Blood Pressure Readings

You must know that the normal blood pressure reading, is not an absolute value. It varies from person to person, and it also depends on person’s age and medical history. Although it’s realtive, generally it has been seen that a blood pressure of 112 mm Hg (Systolic) and 64 mm Hg (Diastolic) is considered normal when the body is at rest. The normal blood pressure values for children are lower than this.

The values of normal range blood pressure also changes, depending on the time of the day and activity. For example when we sleep or rest, the systolic and diastolic values drop. During strenuous activities, they increase. The general range of blood pressure readings, that are considered normal in an adult human being are 90-119 mm Hg (Systolic) and 60-79 mm Hg (Diastolic).
